Objectives. This study aimed to map the evidence on burnout syndrome in higher education teachers and its relationship with ergonomic and biopsychosocial factors. Methods. We performed a scoping review of articles published up to 2021, extracting the location, study design, sample characteristics and assessment methods, and investigated ergonomic and biopsychosocial factors. Results. Eighteen studies were found in 12 countries, and most used a cross-sectional design (n = 17/18, 94%). The Maslach burnout inventory was the most used assessment method (n = 9, 50%). There is a consensus that burnout syndrome in higher education teachers requires more attention, as it can be related to physical, mental and social factors. Conclusions. In the professional environment, physical ergonomic characteristics or those related to work organization deserve greater attention, as well as psychosocial factors, as they are strongly associated with burnout syndrome.

The international literature on university teaching, has insisted on the need to combine a double component in the professional profile of teachers: content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. Regarding the content, the area of knowledge of radiology and physical medicine is made up of different medical specialties, among which are radiodiagnosis, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, physical medicine and rehabilitation. On the other hand, the pedagogical content knowledge is framed by framework that the Bologna Declaration (1999). Focusing on radiodiagnosis, the ideal candidates must be professionals in this medical specialty, vocational teachers and people who find in the undergraduate teaching process an opportunity to transmit their knowledge, experiences and values in an entertaining and understandable way for students who are incorporated into medical knowledge.

La literatura internacional plantea un doble componente en el perfil profesional del profesor universitario: el conocimiento del contenido (content knowledge) y el conocimiento didáctico del contenido (pedagogical content knowledge). En cuanto al contenido, el área de conocimiento de radiología y medicina física está compuesta por diferentes especialidades médicas entre las que se encuentran radiodiagnóstico, medicina nuclear, oncología radioterápica, medicina física y rehabilitación. Por su parte, el conocimiento didáctico del contenido está enmarcado por todo lo que ha significado la Declaración de Bolonia (1999). Centrándonos en el radiodiagnóstico, los candidatos idóneos deben ser profesionales de esta especialidad médica, vocacionales y que hallen en el proceso docente de pregrado una oportunidad de transmitir sus conocimientos, experiencias y valores de una forma amena y comprensible para alumnos que se incorporan al conocimiento médico.(AU)

RESUMO

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Tsuneko Okazaki is a hero of science. Together with her late husband, Professor Reiji Okazaki, she discovered that DNA replication involves the discontinuous synthesis of the DNA lagging strand by intermediates of, what is now called, "Okazaki fragments." She has been a pioneer for women in science and, in 1983, became the first female full Professor at Nagoya University. From 1997 to 2012, she was a full Professor and later a Visiting Professor at Fujita Health University, and this review zooms in on that period. Besides a summary of her career, this article also includes personal memories of researchers who worked with Professor Okazaki.

OBJECTIVE: To determine what resources are available and useful for the professional development of mid-career faculty (MCF) in pharmacy education to foster career advancement. METHODS: A 37-question survey was sent to 7236 members of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, an estimated 4640 of whom represented the target population of associate professors, full professors, and administrators. Semi-structured focus groups involving these 3 groups of faculty were held to provide additional insight. RESULTS: Of 4640 targeted pharmacy faculty, 825 completed the survey (18% response rate). At least one response was received from 98% of colleges and schools of pharmacy. Over 75% of MCF indicated a goal to advance to full professor, of whom only 55% were very or extremely confident they would be promoted. Clarity in expectations for advancement was identified as the most important factor for advancement; however, only 57% of MCF respondents agreed that their department/division has clearly delineated expectations for promotion. Protected time for research/scholarship was perceived by MCF as another important factor for advancement but was not provided as a resource to 61% of faculty. Thematic analysis of 7 focus groups including 31 faculty revealed 10 themes reinforcing the survey results. CONCLUSION: This study identified misalignment between the needs of MCF and the resources available to facilitate development/advancement.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly affected the physical, mental, and social well-being of millions worldwide. It has also brought about abrupt disruptions to the entire university system, whose students form a crucial segment of society. The pandemic's effects on student education and well-being have been particularly significant. One of the primary consequences has been a drastic reduction in physical activity levels among students, leading to mental and physical health problems. Despite the rapid growth in the literature exploring student experiences during the pandemic, there is a paucity of research on how this decline in physical activity has affected the five strengths of the healthy student: optimism, self-efficacy, resilience, engagement, and hope. Therefore, the aim of this investigation is to examine the relationship between physical activity levels and the five strengths of the healthy student at two different time points (pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19) through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Healthy Student Questionnaire. The study involved 897 participants, with 290 participating in the pre-COVID-19 phase and 607 participating in the COVID-19 phase. The results revealed significant differences in the five strengths between the two periods. Students who engaged in physical activity exhibited significantly higher optimism scores in the pre-COVID-19 phase. During the COVID-19 phase, physically active students demonstrated significantly higher scores in optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy. These findings provide clear guidance for university administrators seeking to enhance student well-being in a post-pandemic world and in the face of future disruptions. Universities should consider implementing physical exercise programs for their students to promote psychosocial well-being and provide training and resources to equip faculty members with new skills to better understand and support students' perceptions.

Objetivo: analisar o nível de estresse e qualidade de vida em docentes universitários segundo a literatura científica. Método:foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica cujos dados foram coletados no período compreendido entre fevereiro de 2023 e março de 2023, utilizando-se como fontes a biblioteca eletrônica Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO) e as bases de dados Literatura Latino Americana e do Caribe em Ciências Sociais e da Saúde (LILACS), Bases de Dados em Enfermagem (BDENF) e PubMed. Resultados:Entre os fatores estressores, destacam-se a alta carga de trabalho, a falta de reconhecimento, a pressão por publicações e as relações interpessoais no ambiente de trabalho. Esses fatores podem afetar negativamente a saúde física e psicológica dos docentes, bem como sua vida pessoal, comprometendo seu bem-estar e sua satisfação profissional. Por outro lado, a revisão bibliográfica também apontou programas de intervenção que visam reduzir o estresse e promover a qualidade de vida dos docentes universitários, baseados em estratégias de prevenção, coping e apoio social. Conclusão:é fundamental compreender a relação entre estresse e qualidade de vida em docentes universitários, bem como desenvolver estratégias que possam minimizar o impacto do estresse e melhorar o bem-estar desses profissionais


Objective: to analyze the level of stress and quality of life in university professors according to the scientific literature. A Teoria da Atividade desenvolvida pelo pensador russo Alexis Leontiev oferece subsídios para compreender a constituição humana a partir das relações sociais e apropriação do conhecimento. Nesse caminho, o desenvolvimento das ações do professor no ensino deve se constituir em atividade. Assim, objetivamos investigar docentes em exercício na Educação Básica para reunir elementos sobre a constituição da atividade docente na sociedade do trabalho. Para isso, três professoras do Ensino Básico público contribuíram com a pesquisa: foram realizadas entrevistas semiestruturadas e acompanhadas as rotinas de trabalho nas escolas envolvidas. Nos resultados, depreendemos que há possibilidades das ações de ensino se constituírem em atividade, mesmo diante das condições alienantes e fragmentadas que o professorado vivencia nesse cenário. Ainda, como considerações, reiteramos a defesa por políticas públicas que garantam condições concretas para a atuação docente para que possa cumprir seu papel junto à transformação e emancipação dos sujeitos pela Educação.


La Teoría de la Actividad desarrollada por el pensador ruso Alexis Leontiev ofrece ayuda para comprender la constitución humana a partir de las relaciones sociales y apropiación del conocimiento. En ese camino, el desarrollo de las acciones del profesor en la enseñanza debe se constituir en actividad. Así, objetivamos investigar docentes en ejercicio en la Enseñanza Básica para reunir elementos sobre la constitución de la actividad docente en la sociedad del trabajo. Para eso, tres profesoras de la Enseñanza Básica pública contribuyeron a la investigación: se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas y acompañadas las rutinas de labor en las escuelas abarcadas. En los resultados, deprendemos que hay posibilidades das acciones de enseñanza se constituyeren en actividad, incluso delante de las condiciones alienantes y fragmentadas que el profesorado vivencia en ese escenario. Aún, como consideraciones, hacemos hincapié en la defensa por políticas públicas que garanticen condiciones concretas a la actuación docente para que pueda cumplir su papel junto a la transformación y emancipación de los sujetos por la Educación.


The Activity Theory developed by russian thinker Alexis Leontiev offers subsidies to understand human constitution from social relations and knowledge appropriation. In this way, the development of the teacher's actions in teaching should be the activity. Thus, we aim to investigate teachers' performance in the Basic Education to gather elements about the constitution of teaching activity in the labor society. For this, three teachers from public Basic Education contributed to the research: semi -structured interviews were conducted and the work routines were accompanied in the involved schools. In the results, we find that there are possibilities for teaching actions to be activity, even in the face of the alienating and fragmented conditions that the teacher's experiences in this scenario. Also, as considerations, we reiterate the defense for public policies that guarantee concrete conditions for teaching action so that it can fulfill its role with the transformation and emancipation of the subjects by education.

Educational systems globally, and notably in the Ibero-American context, underwent significant adaptations in response to the myriad challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pedagogical evolution unfolded through three discernible phases: predominantly online, hybrid, and ultimately, a return to face-to-face instruction. While these phases were universally apparent, cultural, socio-economic, and health disparities across regions subtly influenced the quality and experiential aspects of teaching and learning within these models. This study seeks to illuminate the psychological profiles and evaluative perspectives regarding teaching and learning quality among university educators during COVID-19's tri-phase educational transformation. Engaging 601 university instructors from various Ibero-American countries, a comprehensive questionnaire mapped demographic, academic, and psychological landscapes across the pandemic's distinctive epochs. The pivot to online educational methodologies, supplanting traditional modalities, permeated numerous facets of the educational endeavor, particularly impacting faculty life and wellbeing. Data underscored a prevalent sentiment of loneliness, indicative of broader mental health challenges, especially pronounced among educators in Latin American nations. Notwithstanding these hurdles, Latin American educators demonstrated a predilection towards online instruction, in stark contrast to their European peers, who exhibited a preference for in-person pedagogy. This study unveils the divergent pedagogical preferences and mental health challenges among university educators in the Ibero-American realm during COVID-19's educational shifts, underlining the need for adaptable educational frameworks and robust mental health support, attuned to the region's distinct socio-cultural and economic contexts.

El estudio se enmarca en la competencia percibida por propios profesores de Educación Física para la inclusión de escolares primarios con discapacidad física. Se formuló como objetivo analizar la competencia percibida por profesores de Educación Física para la inclusión de escolares primarios con discapacidad física, en dos municipios de la región central de Cuba. Los datos provienen de un cuestionario cumplimentado por 40 profesores de Educación Física de dos municipios de la Región central cubana (divididos en dos grupos de 20). Se utilizaron métodos teóricos como el analítico-sintético y el inductivo-deductivo; y empíricos como la entrevista, la observación y la encuesta; del nivel matemático y/o estadístico, la distribución empírica de frecuencia. El resultado de la investigación reflejó la descripción de la autopercepción de los profesores de ambas poblaciones, en las tres dimensiones, con resultados más favorables para el municipio de Cabaiguán. La autopercepción más favorable de los profesores del municipio de Cabaiguán, para realizar adaptaciones específicas, emitir instrucción a los iguales y seguridad en el proceso de inclusión de escolares con discapacidad en la clase de Educación Física.


O estudo enquadra-se na competência percebida pelos próprios professores de Educação Física para a inclusão de alunos do ensino fundamental com deficiência física. O objetivo foi formulado para analisar a competência percebida pelos professores de Educação Física para a inclusão de alunos do ensino fundamental com deficiência física, em dois municípios da região central de Cuba. Os dados provêm de um questionário respondido por 40 professores de Educação Física de dois municípios da região central de Cuba (divididos em dois grupos de 20). Foram utilizados métodos teóricos como analítico-sintético e indutivo-dedutivo; e empíricos, como entrevistas, observações e pesquisas; do nível matemático e/ou estatístico, a distribuição de frequência empírica. O resultado da pesquisa refletiu a descrição da autopercepção dos professores de ambas as populações, nas três dimensões, com resultados mais favoráveis para o município de Cabaiguán. A autopercepção mais favorável dos professores do município de Cabaiguán, para fazer adaptações específicas, dar instrução aos pares e segurança no processo de inclusão de alunos com deficiência nas aulas de Educação Física.


The study is part of the competence perceived by Physical Education teachers themselves for the inclusion of primary schoolchildren with physical disabilities. The objective was to analyze the competence perceived by Physical Education teachers for the inclusion of primary schoolchildren with physical disabilities, in two municipalities in the central region of Cuba. The data come from a questionnaire completed by 40 Physical Education teachers from two municipalities in the Cuban central region (divided into two groups of 20). Theoretical methods such as the analytical-synthetic and the inductive-deductive were used; as empirical ones the interview, the observation and the survey were used; and from the mathematical and/or statistical level, the empirical frequency distribution was used. The result of the research reflected the description of the self-perception of the teachers of both populations, in the three dimensions, with more favorable results for the municipality of Cabaiguán. The most favorable self-perception of teachers in the municipality of Cabaiguán, to make specific adaptations, issue instruction to equals and security in the process of inclusion of schoolchildren with disabilities in Physical Education class.

El logro de una educación accesible y de calidad para todos los ciudadanos es, en la actualidad, una de las prioridades para la formación de profesionales, puesto que estos contribuyen al desarrollo de un sistema de educación reconocido, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. De esta manera, el estudio realizado se propuso como objetico diseñar una estrategia pedagógica para la preparación al profesor como mediador de conflictos en la clase de Educación Física, de las escuelas secundarias básicas del municipio La Habana del Este. Para ello, se utilizó un enfoque mixto, con el fin de agrupar los análisis de documentos y las descripciones cualitativas junto a tablas y figuras para complementar y enriquecer el estudio cualitativa y cuantitativamente. Como principal resultado, se evidenciaron los principios, premisas y el procedimiento metodológico para la integración de influencias educativas. En sentido general, la preparación del profesor como mediador de conflictos da respuesta a los programas priorizados del Ministerio de Educación en su agenda de perfeccionamiento hacia el 2030 y del Instituto Nacional de Deporte, Educación Física y Recreación.


A concretização de um ensino acessível e de qualidade para todos os cidadãos é atualmente uma das prioridades para a formação dos profissionais, uma vez que contribuem para o desenvolvimento de um sistema educativo reconhecido, tanto a nível nacional como internacional. Desta forma, o estudo propôs desenhar uma estratégia pedagógica para preparar o professor como mediador de conflitos nas aulas das escolas secundárias básicas do município de La Habana del Este. Para isso, foi utilizada uma abordagem mista, de modo a agrupar a análise de documentos e descrições qualitativas com tabelas e figuras para complementar e enriquecer o estudo, tanto qualitativo como quantitativo. O principal resultado é a integração das influências educacionais, os fundamentos, princípios, premissas e procedimento metodológico. De um modo geral, é evidente a preparação do professor como mediador de conflitos, respondendo aos programas prioritários do Ministério da Educação em aperfeiçoamento para 2030 e do Instituto Nacional de Esportes, Educação Física e Recreação.


The achievement of accessible and quality education for all citizens is, currently, one of the priorities for the training of professionals, since they contribute to the development of a recognized education system, both nationally and internationally. In this way, the objective of the study carried out was to design a pedagogical strategy to prepare the teacher as a conflict mediator in the Physical Education class, in the basic secondary schools of the municipality of La Habana del Este. For this purpose, a mixed approach was used, in order to group document analyzes and qualitative descriptions together with tables and figures to complement and enrich the study qualitatively and quantitatively. As the main result, the principles, premises and methodological procedure for the integration of educational influences were evident. In a general sense, the preparation of the teacher as a conflict mediator responds to the prioritized programs of the Ministry of Education in its improvement agenda towards 2030 and of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation.

O início da carreira docente é compreendido como um período intenso e desafiador para o professor. Nesse sentido, a pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar a satisfação no trabalho dos professores de Educação Física no início da carreira docente. O estudo descritivo de abordagem qualitativa contou com a participação de 16 professores efetivos que estavam entre o 1º e 4º ano de docência nas escolas municipais e estaduais da cidade de Maringá (Paraná). Para coleta de dados foi empregada uma entrevista semiestruturada e as informações foram analisadas conforme a técnica da análise de conteúdo. Evidenciou-se que todos os grupos de professores se encontram insatisfeitos com as dimensões: venda da força de trabalho, condições de trabalho, progressão na carreira e relevância social no trabalho. A Integração Social no ambiente de trabalho foi a única dimensão a se destacar como satisfatória para todos os grupos investigados. Os professores com três e quatro anos de docência demonstraram maior satisfação no trabalho quando comparados aos demais. Os professores com um e dois anos de docência demonstraram maior insatisfação no trabalho, os quais apresentaram postura mais crítica.


El inicio de la carrera docente se entiende como un periodo intenso y desafiante para el docente. En este sentido, la investigación tiene como objetivo analizar la satisfacción laboral de los profesores de Educación Física al inicio de su carrera docente. El estudio descriptivo con enfoque cualitativo contó con la participación de 16 profesores efectivos que se desempeñaban entre los niveles de 1º y 4º año de enseñanza en escuelas municipales y estaduales de la ciudad de Maringá (Paraná). Para la recolección de datos se utilizó la entrevista semiestructurada y la información fue analizada según la técnica de análisis de contenido. Se evidenció que todos los grupos de docentes están insatisfechos con las dimensiones: venta de mano de obra, condiciones de trabajo, progresión profesional y relevancia social en el trabajo. La Integración Social en el ambiente de trabajo fue la única dimensión que se destacó como satisfactoria para todos los grupos investigados. Los docentes con tres y cuatro años de docencia demostraron mayor satisfacción laboral en comparación con los demás. Los docentes con uno y dos años de experiencia docente mostraron mayor insatisfacción en el trabajo, con una actitud más crítica.


The beginning of the teaching career is understood as an intense and challenging period for the teacher. In this sense, the research aims to analyze the job satisfaction of physical education teachers at the beginning of their teaching careers. This descriptive study with a qualitative approach involved 16 effective teachers between the 1st and 4th year of teaching in municipal and state schools in the city of Maringá (Paraná). For data collection, a semi-structured interview was used, and the information was analyzed according to the content analysis technique. It was evident that all groups of teachers are dissatisfied with the dimensions: workforce remuneration, working conditions, career progression, and social relevance at work. Social Integration in the work environment was the only dimension to stand out as satisfactory for all investigated groups. Teachers with three and four years of teaching demonstrated greater job satisfaction when compared to the others. Teachers with one and two years of teaching experience showed greater dissatisfaction at work, with a more critical attitude.

Resumo Enquadramento: No campo da enfermagem a advocacy procura contribuir no direito à saúde, que se insere no campo dos direitos humanos, pois está intrinsecamente relacionado ao direito de todos a uma vida saudável. Objetivo: Analisar a perceção de docentes sobre a advocacy na enfermagem e discutir as estratégias de promoção de advocacy para o trabalhador docente universitário de enfermagem. Metodologia: Estudo descritivo e exploratório, de abordagem qualitativa realizado em duas universidades públicas situadas no município do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Os participantes foram 14 docentes de enfermagem. Utilizou-se o grupo focal e os dados foram analisados à luz da técnica de análise de conteúdo. Resultados: Destaca-se a advocacy como atividade imperativa para alcançar a defesa dos interesses da categoria profissional, bem como a utilização das mídias como estratégia de divulgação do trabalho da enfermagem, incluindo os docentes de enfermagem. Conclusão: A advocacy é uma estratégia de promoção e valorização dos docentes de enfermagem em universidades sendo necessário o investimento nessa estratégia como importante recurso para a promoção da valorização profissional.


Abstract Background: In nursing, advocacy seeks to contribute to the right to health, which is intrinsically related to the human right to a healthy life. Objective: To analyze university teachers' perceptions of advocacy in nursing and discuss strategies to promote advocacy for university nursing teachers. Methodology: A descriptive and exploratory study with a qualitative approach was carried out in two public universities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The participants were 14 nursing teachers. A focus group was conducted, and data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. Results: Advocacy stands out as a crucial activity to defend the professional category's interests, using the media as a strategy for disseminating nursing work, including nursing teachers. Conclusion: An investment in advocacy is needed as it is a strategy for valuing university nursing teachers and promoting their professional development.


Resumen Marco contextual: En el ámbito de la enfermería, la advocacy pretende contribuir al derecho a la salud, que se enmarca en el ámbito de los derechos humanos, ya que está intrínsecamente relacionado con el derecho de todos a una vida sana. Objetivo: Analizar la percepción de los profesores sobre la advocacy en la enfermería y debatir estrategias para promover la advocacy para el trabajador docente universitario de enfermería. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo y exploratorio de enfoque cualitativo realizado en dos universidades públicas localizadas en el municipio de Río de Janeiro, Brasil. Los participantes fueron 14 profesores de enfermería. Se utilizó el grupo focal y los datos fueron analizados con la técnica de análisis de contenido. Resultados: Se destaca la advocacy como actividad imprescindible para lograr la defensa de los intereses de la categoría profesional, así como la utilización de los medios de comunicación como estrategia de difusión del trabajo de enfermería, incluidos los docentes de enfermería. Conclusión: La advocacy es una estrategia de promoción y valoración del profesorado de enfermería en las universidades y es necesario invertir en esta estrategia como recurso fundamental para la promoción de la valoración profesional.

PURPOSE: This study aims to establish if medical students think it is fair to be assessed by nursing professors in interprofessional education (IPE) and why. METHODS: Eighty-seven third-year medical students who participated in the IPE in 2022 submitted self-reflection essays. They were asked how they perceived the assessors, and 86 medical students responded to content analyses. RESULTS: Sixty-seven students (77.9%) agreed to be assessed by nursing professors. They believed that interprofessional assessment is possible because it is an IPE. They also believed that this was an opportunity to be assessed from various perspectives. Nineteen students (22.1%) objected because the assessment criteria may be different and nursing professors would not understand the learning experiences of medical students. CONCLUSION: Regarding the reasons medical students oppose it, IPE developers should supplement the development of assessment criteria and understand learners' experiences during planning assessment.

This biographical article takes the reader on the unlikely journey of a small-town dermatologist, Robert T. Brodell MD, from private practice to academics. It is designed to demonstrate that the road less traveled may be of interest to many other "regular" dermatologists in private practice… particularly those who enjoy teaching. The themes of hard work, dedication, overcoming failure, optimism, and passion are apparent. Life experiences are the basis for recommendations that may help others develop and then reach their academic goals. We hope that this will serve as a guide for physicians who aspire to take this leap.

RESUMO

Despite taking on heavier teaching and service loads, an expanding research program, and serving as mentors to junior faculty, mid-career faculty often feel unsupported. Providing a solid foundation through resource allocation and sharing between and within institutions can facilitate establishment or improvement of faculty development initiatives, workload equity, transparent policies, routine performance evaluation, a process for faculty recognition, and a system of mentoring to create an environment where this essential group of faculty can continue to grow. The following discussion, which includes suggested methods to achieve these goals with a focus on mid-career faculty, serves as a call to action for pharmacy school administrators to assess the state of mid-career faculty at their institution, and if indicated, implement systems that promote success among this group.

Luiz Rodolpho Travassos, a Brazilian scientist recognized in several areas of research, began his studies in the field of oncology in the late 1970s when he took a sabbatical at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY, USA. At that time, the discovery and characterization of human melanoma glycoprotein antigens yielded important publications. This experience allowed 16 years later, and Dr. Travassos founded UNONEX, significantly contributing with discoveries in the area of oncology and training of researchers. This review will address all the contributions of team of researchers who, together with Dr. Travassos, collaborated with investigations into molecules and processes that lead to the development of melanoma.
